In addition to the subject they want to study, it’s important to consider the duration of the programme and the qualification it leads to.
Three-year programmes lead to a vocational certificate. They are a good option for students who want to gain plenty of practical experience and start working in their chosen field as soon as possible, for example as a hairdresser or car mechanic.
Four-year programmes lead to a high school graduation exam (maturita). Some programmes combine vocational training with a high school graduation exam, so students receive both a vocational certificate and a high school diploma. These programmes are a good option for students who want to gain professional skills while keeping the option of continuing their studies, for example at university.
When choosing a high school, it is worth considering these questions
- What are your child’s interests and what are their strengths?
- Would they like to start working after high school or continue their studies?
- Do they prefer practical, hands-on activities or rather theoretical learning?
