3_3 ADMISSIONS TO HIGH SCHOOLS WITH A TALENT EXAM

High schools with a talent exam offer programs focused on an artistic discipline, such as painting, design, singing, or drama. There are also sports grammar schools. The admission procedure to schools with a talent exam is different, as applicants are required to demonstrate their endowment. Thus, these schools (except for sports grammar schools) do not organize the unified entrance examination.

APPLICATIONS
It is possible to submit up to 2 applications in the 1st and 2nd rounds of the admission procedure to high schools with a talent exam. In addition, up to 3 applications may be submitted to 3- or 4-year programs without a talent exam. It is important to order the schools according to your priority.
The best way to apply is using the DiPSy online system.

DATES
The application submission deadline is identical with that for other high schools, i.e., February 20

!From 2025, the application submission deadline has been unified for all programs.

Talent exams are held in March and April. Each school sends an invitation detailing the date and time of the exam.
The results will be published on May, 15 in the DiPSy system and on the schools‘ websites.

CRITERIA
Each school publishes admission criteria for the individual programs on its website, such as:

  • Talent exam – differs according to the program (e.g., drawing, musical performance, dancing, dramatic monolog)
  • Portfolio – applicant’s collected works (e.g., drawings, sketches, photos) that demonstrate their abilities, creativity, and talent
  • Interview – some schools organize interviews during which applicants explain their motivation to study
  • Test – e.g., history, culture, and history of art

Sports grammar schools include a general physical aptitude test.

It’s a good idea to start preparing for the admission procedure early, especially when it comes to creating a portfolio. Schools often organize preparatory courses.

DURATION OF STUDIES
Studies take 4 years and are concluded by the maturita exam. Some fields of study (typical of arts and crafts, such as goldsmithery, woodcarving, artistic blacksmithery) may be concluded by an apprenticeship certificate if taught as 3-year programs.
Conservatories also offer 6- and 8-year programs, entered into after the 5th or the 7th grade of elementary school (applies also to grammar schools). Upon a successful completion of conservatory studies, it’s often possible to pursue post-secondary vocational studies.
